Title: Does Karl only have one shirt?
Post by: Cliff on December 09, 2008, 05:27:33 pm
Some people have wondered how many T-Shirt(s) does Karl own...

If this video does not work right now... it is because it is being rendered by YouTube. Just come back a little later and you can find out everything you wanted to know about Karl's wardrobe.

And I thought you were too busy to do the ornamentation video tutorial...

 ;D

True, Laurant, so very true!  However, I felt it was important to nip the "Karl never changes his clothes" rumor in the bud (before well-meaning forum members started taking up a collection to buy me some clothes). Also, as someone a bit older and perhaps more experienced, I wanted to offer you young guys a bit of valuable fashion advice. After all, there is more to life than just ocarinas...I think. :)

Hey Cliff Karl, don't listen to Laurent!

This video was a top priority. How can one think about ornamentation if he/she's struggling about your t-shirts??

Thank you so much for doing that. My playing attitude improved sensibly since you made the video.

I can't imagine what will happen when I'll also view it.

Now, there's a man who understands clothing!

I work with a guy that finds one shirt he likes and buys it in bulk so it always looks like he has the same shirt on. So I guess its more common then I thought. I mean it was nice having the same uniform every day when I was in the US Army.

 <GRIN>

All the best,

Dave

My grandpa (rip) had like a 5 sets of grey suits he wore, grey pants and grey button up shirt. This is all I ever saw him wear, except when he went to the doctor he had a polo shirt I think :) I guess if you know what you like, what the hay! Dan

I believe it was Einstein who bought several of the same suit so he wouldn't have to devote any mental effort to choosing his clothes. Not a new idea then, but Karl is in very good company.

Wow!
9 minutes talking about a grey t-shirt.
Karl you would make a great congressman and fillabutsters would be your forte.
Just joking ::)
I thougt it was funny ;).
But the real question is do you wear the same type of pants every day as well???

Karl,

I agree I just can't do It. I think my boss would think, well I'm not sure what he would think.

Maybe we should all submit videos playing while wearing Gray T-Shirts.

BTW I thought it was black in the videos.

Twist

PS. I do miss my days in the Marines...... just wear the same uniform each day, do what the CO says etc.

PPS Were off to Ireland tomorrow for vacation. Maybe I can find some good whistle music while there. Talk to you when we get back.

lol, i think it's amusing. "Why do you have one shirt in every video", "Do you ever wash that shirt" ha.... it's obvious he had to wash it some time. Even if he only had one, he'd still wash it between videos(unless he was off his top)

AzKiteMan, how could you even think for one moment that I am off my top?  Have you been talking to my neighbors or to members of my family?  Why, in this very thread I have been called a veritable Einstein (see quote below). At least, that's how I interpreted K-bird's comment.

I believe it was Einstein who bought several of the same suit so he wouldn't have to devote any mental effort to choosing his clothes. Not a new idea then, but Karl is in very good company.

I can't believe I have not thought of this before!  I can't count the times I've bumbled around the cold basement in my underwear looking for clothes that I know are not clean (oddly enough its usually a grey t-shirt...)  Maybe you are slowly brain-washing ocrinists and secretly gathering forces to take over the world... The first stage is the uniform. Next, we all learn how to play amazingly good ocarina music that no one can resist listening to. Finally, we will be secretly activated through a youtube video and we will go out and infect the world with our music like a virus... and who knows what comes after that... :o

Jupp. The "Gray T-shirt" conspiracy will soon conquer you too!  ::)

Title: Re: Does Karl only have one shirt?
Post by: Karl on May 08, 2009, 10:12:39 pm
I canít believe you guys figured out the gray t-shirt/world domination conspiracy! When I first made that gray t-shirt video, it was a sort of tongue-in-cheek apology for wearing the same color t-shirt in all my videos. Taking over the world was more of an afterthought.

You know, Iím actually relieved that the gray t-shirt conspiracy has finally been exposed. These days, itís tough enough trying to spend time with my family and run a small company without having to plan how to take control of an entire planet.

So now, if you do choose to wear a gray t-shirt most of the time, donít do it just because you are being manipulated into participating in a sinister plot and stuff like that. Instead, do it for the freedom, do it for the fashion, do it because it is the right thing to do. ;)

9:03 seconds talking about clothing... I see that Karl was a fashion designer in his time as well!  ;D

If there was ever a Mountain Ocarina cartoon series, I'd say Karl should be the main character, because, like a cartoon character, he wears similar clothes every day!  ;D I agree with your sense of fashion, man.  ;)

Yeah, only nine minutes! I barely scratched the surface of this critically important subject, but I decided ahead of time to keep it brief.

Thanks for your insightful commentary on cartoon characters. I think we can all take inspiration from their example. I mean, guys like Bullwinkle, Mickey, and SpongeBob don't waste time every morning deciding what to wear.  They live life instead of dressing in preparation for it!

Business idea:

Why you folks at mountain ocarinas don't start to sell gray shirts? :)

Title: Re: Does Karl only have one shirt?
Post by: Flotonic on June 06, 2009, 03:28:05 pm
Absolutely welcome, Karl! I must agree to the cartoon character clothing selection theory... again. :D Speaking of which... I did, at one time, come across a five in one package of black shirts, so I bought it (who won't buy stuff that's five for the price of one?  ::)). I find myself wearing them often, so why not just buy about five of those packages when my other shirts get too small? I'll have a trademark!  ;D

Also, nice business idea, Spatolo! "You'll get half off your Mountain Ocarina if you buy a gray shirt for double the price of the ocarina itself!" It's like the fanbase is composed of people that actually think that's a deal, and WalMart, Krogers, KMart, and many other clothing stores go out of business because of that.  ::)

We'll buy a bunch of karl's shirts in different sizes and sew a "Mountain Ocarinas" label on the inside neck, and sell them for 3.5 dollars more xP

We need to ask Karl what brand of t-shirt he has so we can all buy hundreds of them and have a world-wide Mountain Ocarina-owner dress code.  Then if you think you see a familiar face in public, but aren't sure, just check for The T-Shirt!

It's true that this would be one way to find each other in this wide world. We could walk down any busy city street, scan the hurrying masses, and quickly locate other Mountain Ocarinas players to make music with.

Now, I'm not being critical, but there might be a couple tiny drawbacks to this plan.  For instance, how well would this work at the beach, at graduation ceremonies, or at formal black tie dinners? And wouldn't a mandatory dress code impinge just a little on our freedom to wear a gray t-shirt?  Maybe this is a question for a philosopher like Ubi.

All drawbacks aside, from a busines owner's point of view, I like the "WOULD YOU LIKE FRIES WITH THAT?" approach that has worked so well for McDonald's and Burger King. "Would you like a gray t-shirt with your order?" However, if we follow Noah's advice, our approach would be slightly different.  We wouldn't be asking. We'd be telling people, "You WILL have a gray t-shirt with your order!"

Karl is actually a PhD professor (see attachment).

It's true that this would be one way to find each other in this wide world. We could walk down any busy city street, scan the hurrying masses, and quickly locate other Mountain Ocarinas players to make music with.
We should have a secret handshake or, better yet, a password-counterpassword system. Imagine yourself spotting someone in a gray shirt. It's a karl-type T, but just to make sure you yell "MOUNTAIN!" and everyone starts staring at you with a puzzled look; except for that one guy, who yells back "OCARINA!". And then both of you proceed to play all day long ;D

[...]how well would this work at the beach, at graduation ceremonies, or at formal black tie dinners? And wouldn't a mandatory dress code impinge just a little on our freedom to wear a gray t-shirt?[...]
We could all go Automan style (see attachment*). It would probably require the T-shirts to be made radioactive, though :o

*Couldn't find a picture of him wearing a suit.

I read sometime ago that a local Harley Davidson retail dealer increased their leather jacket sales by 40% after they started asking customers something like "How about an authentic leather jacket to go along with your new bike?".

Help!!!!!??? I can't find link where I can get grey t-shirt with MO Logo and with a huge photo of Karl on the back! I tired to look for it…

I was just kidding!!  ;)
But by the way I love dark grey color too!!
And one more thing to add is that when Karl does not change color of his t-shirt it helps to stay focus more on his message in video then on how he looks! Way to go, Karl!  ;D

Let's look on how it could be....

"Oh jeez. My new warmstone C ocarina is completely out of tune and falling apart. Oh, well. At least I know he has a great selection of t shirts."

I'm definitely glad Karl spends more time on his ocarina crafting rather than his wardrobe for helpful videos. Videos aren't so helpful if they have poorly developed ocarinas. Well judged, Karl, well judged. :)

I don't think using T-shirts of the same color every day is a problem (as long as they are clean).

But if you are doing it solely because you have a hard time choosing your t-shirts, you might want to match t-shirts of similar hues. Example: a light blue t-shirt with dark blue pants. You can also try colors that make a desaturated (gray) color when mixed. Example: an orange T-shirt with blue pants (this one is very risky if we are talking about formal clothes, of course, because it tends to be bold and aggressive). And more importantly, something that rarely fails is to mix earth colors together (brown with black, for example).

It works for me, and I using the color matching theory I can mix things quickly.

Oh, I forgot though that the brown color might not be well-seen in the US. In that case, you can try any of the other earth colors.

That's just my favorite color!

I did this years ago with white t-shirts and cargo pants (a few different styles/tones for the pants... i deployed chaos theory for clothes selection of "first one i grab is it" to simplify the variety and add some excitement to the morning ritual). I think I may get on board with this Grey thing though, lots of potential there (and it'll hide the coffee/tea stains  ;D)

Also I ran some numbers since I'm always a big fan of hard proof to back up decisions when possible. Assuming a simplified wardrobe saves an average of 5 minutes a day, then over the course of a year it will save you 1825 minutes or 30 hours. That's over a FULL DAY extra. Now assuming people sleep 8 hours each day that leaves them with 16 hours awake roughly. Lets just say average of 14 hours of productive time a day. That works out to 2 full productive days a year just by making the simple choice of simplifying your clothing! (and for 'special occasion' clothing, just set that up on a hanger in the closet or something for quick grab/go on the rare occasion you need it...such as funerals - well I'm hoping funerals are rare occasions for you anyway)

Now why did I choose 5 minutes in the beginning? Well what favorite instrument can you play in those 5 minutes and still make meaningful progress in your skills with? ;) The math has spoken, simplifying you dress code leads directly to being the next "Ocarina Guru" :)

(and yes i realize this thread - as with most in this forum are old as dirt, but its still near the top so figured it's fair game. Besides you can't argue with the math, Karl's got it figured and we all need to get with the program :P)
