Title: Coloured Polycarbonate Ocarinas?
Post by: jtungyep on July 22, 2009, 02:27:47 pm
It occurred to me as I was walking the dogs and playing my black poly G that if I couldn't afford a beautiful warmstone instrument  maybe the MO guys could make a few batches of the polys in different colours: no re-tooling or design changes; just a different dye in the plastic vat... What d'ya think, Karl? Cliff?
Cheers,
John

PS Anybody got any groovy colour requests?

If Karl and Company ever do decide to do color combinations It would be great to do tri-color ones. Red bottom white liner and blue top(USA, England, France etc..)Or Red Black and Yellow(Germany). You get the idea

Not a bad idea....
I would go for a gray ocarina with black hole-borders.... Or better, a black one with orange borders !!!  ;D

How about an "Ivory white" with yellow/goldenrod accents? I'd get one of those in a heartbeat! ;D
(Not that I wouldn't wanna get the more expensive ones, of course :-X)

I think this is a great idea, and would have a good effect on MO sales.  I know that the problem is not at Karl's end; it's the company that makes the polycarbonate parts.  That company would rather make large lots of a single color than make smaller lots of different colors, and their "preference" translates into greater cost per unit for smaller lots.  But maybe Karl's no-nonsense negotiation skills (not to mention his Tae Kwon Do skills) could make this happen.  I am now 100% convinced that the ugliness of the polycarbonate MOs is cutting into sales, and equally convinced that giving the prospective buyer a choice of color schemes would stimulate sales--especially among younger buyers.  We had another thread about this, but I think the idea is worth revisiting.

I have to agree. Even if the polys were in several solid colors (completely blue, red, yellow, green, etc.), I think people would be more open to giving them a try. And if there were a white one, kids would love the idea of playing on a Wii-Mote :D

I was kind of disappointed in the fact that with the Poly's you don't get a choice of colors. While I personally still would have gone for the black/gray set up they have now (well... maybe a black with red tone holes) it would be nice to at least see the option available.

I haven't been here wrong but from my understanding Karl is open to the idea but the fellers who make the Ocarina's for MO are against it, at least without raising prices which would make the colored ones more expensive (maybe even the "vanillla" one more expensive too) which in my opinion wouldn't be too bad, these things are worth more than what you pay for 'em!

Ah, now you've started something.... The color schemes should have names!  In addition to the all-white Wii-Mote, there could be....

Hunter green shell, brown liner: The Robin Hood

Black shell, white liner: The Nun

Bright green shell, purple liner: The Mardi Gras

Black shell, yellow liner: The Bumble Bee

Green shell, black liner: The Green Lantern

Black shell, red liner (already exists, doesn't it?): The Vampire

Orange shell, black liner: The Halloween Special

And if they were close to the regular price, I know people would collect them.

This idea sound so great... I'm so mad that I was raving about collecting them before reaching half the list.

The "Mardi Gras" one intrigues me, Ubi  :)

Maybe the "Mardi Gras" should be purple shell with green liner; whaddya think?

I'd prefer the purple shell with green liner myself. Mainly because the Robin Hood would have a green shell to begin with. You want each combo as unique as possible!

And of course there's the white shell with black liner, rather like my own warmstone, but without the stripe: The Dalmation!

A khaki colored shell with brown liner: The Desert Camo.

I like that one about equally. Some help I am.  :-X

Maybe a Red shell with black lining: "The Ladybug: xD

Green shell, black liner: The Green Lantern

Man, I can just see all the comic book fans drooling over that one, lol. I think a collector's series of MO's is a brilliant idea! Ocarinas are already highly collectible, but having several colors to choose from for particular occasion/mood is too good to pass up  ;)

I'm curious to know if the idea is intriguing the staff to some extent or whatever. :)

Yes. I would love to be able to have more colors. Even with the small variations in the color of the liners we have from time to time, we see that some people have very strong preferences. But as mentioned before by Karl, there are logistical problems with varied colors which are significant to us right now.

If ya'll get the color thing worked out, purple linings would be sweet! Most teens I know are easily persuaded to buy something if their favorite color is on it :3

How about:

Blue shell, orange liner:  the Florida Gator model.
(or substitute favorite college team colors)

Pink shell, Purple liner:  the Barbie model

All purple ocarina:  the Barney model

All green ocarina:  the Green model
(environment friendly)

The green model can also be the "Esperanto" model :)

Well, maybe green with white lining would be more accurate. :-X

White and Orange - The U

I'd probably get that one just to piss off my uncle, since the only college football team he likes is Florida State and I used to be a huge UM fan back when I actually used to follow football in general. :P

this sounds like a great idea to have different colors. Instead of having the gray lining, have the lining for the polys black for example

red shell, black lining
orange shell, black lining
blue shell, black lining
white shell, black lining
black shell, white lining
ect....

Has anyone tried painting the Polycarbonate MOs?

I actually thought about this myself. If you have the ability to draw well or paint well. Couldn't you paint on the MO? maybe some model paint.

Try looking at this thread:

Spatolo tried it at least once.  There is another thread, I just didn't find it.

I have just finished painting my MO Poly G.

I would be a better job if I were a better artist.  But is was fun trying.

In the spirit of modification and personalization, it would be nifty if MO could do laser engraving, a la the newer iPod models. And last night I was thinking how cool it would be if there were "green" ocarinas (ocagreenas? emphatic NO!), made from recycled or reclaimed materials. For instance, polycarbonate is a #7 polymer, like soda bottles, CDs, and cups. And look, ocarinas made the Wikipedia list! Anyway. It was just an idea to play around with. Thanks for sharing your creative ideas, everyone.

My vote is for super bright Glow In The Dark colors. Imagine this glowing musical thing entering a dark room!

My MO is tri-colored; Black, red and light gray. Very cool but Red White and Blue would be cooler.
What kind of paint would work?

if you guys like coloured ocarinas so much, why does this thread not have a single painted poly?

I've only had "My Precious" for about 36 hours. It's too soon to customize it and maybe smeg it all up.
