For Mac users,
here's a programme I've been using for penny whistle music,
and it's great!
There are many abc music libraries on the net
for both modern and ancient music
(such as O'Neill's Music of Ireland 1850).

http://www.barfly.dial.pipex.com/

A shareware integrated text editor/player/viewer for abc music files,
it plays abc files just like midi,
and it displays them as a musical score.
It transposes, speeds up, slows down,'and brings you coffee in bed!

For Windows, etc see the Wicki article here

Here be some-

Audacity- a free sound editing utility basically I like it a lot- it exports to mp3, wav, and ogg. THere's also many effects. You acn also generate a click track to play to. see web site-http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

OpenMod- "The MODPlug Tracker is free, powerful software that enables you to easily create music on your Windows-based PC using instruments freely available on the internet." There are many effects to add- echoes. You can also create background tracks. Pretty easy to use(i could even figure it out) Site-http://www.modplug.com/

MODplug looks interesting.  I've just downloaded it and I'm going to play with it.  Hopefully, I can figure it out, too!

I use a lot of free programs to handle ABC files. They transpose it, they convert them into MIDI and PDF files.

But, they are for Linux, and I don't know if there's any other Linux user other than me here Smiley. If so, just search for "abc" in the repository of your distribution and you'll find them:

abc2pdf
abc2midi
abc2abc

and the like.

Ciao all Smiley

I posted this in another location but here it is again.

I use Forte Free to Transpose / make music. It is simple enough and has quite a lot of features.

I downloaded Forte Free- i like it a lot. I started a topic on sheet music- -and posted a buncha music I made with Forte Free and Bullzip PDF Printer. Forte took about ten minutes to figure out how to work- and it can do a lot. A nice thing is that you can play the music and hear how harmonies sound. rating-8.7/10
