Saturday was a very nice day. In the afternoon, I went shopping. When I was parked in the lot at the supermarket, I did what I often do: I played for a few minutes before going in. The tune was "The Lonesome Boatman," and because it was a nice day, I had the windows open. Within a few minutes, a couple of well-dressed gentlemen came over to listen. When I finished the tune, they asked me about the instrument, so I explained about it, and they both jotted down the information. One of them asked me what the tune was, and said it sounded Native American, which it does, in a way. I explained that it was a modern Irish tune, but that you can play any kind of music on the MO, hymns, folk songs, blues.... He asked for a demonstration of blues, so I played "Georgia on my Mind" all the way through, which he seemed to like. And it's one of my favorite songs to play anyway, since for some reason no one seems to expect to hear it.
The two men thanked me and headed into the supermarket, and I prepared to do the same. Before I had even rolled up the window, however, about eight more people came over, who had been listening from a distance, I guess. They asked me to play some more. So I did two more tunes and gave out more info.
I did eventually get the shopping done, too.

Another brilliant story. I don't know how you manage to get anything done, it sounds like you are always being trailed by a group of budding ocarina players! Cliff is going to have to start paying you commission...

Just go out and play in public and see what happens. People gather around, every time.

How can you play in front of complete strangers just like that I'd be too embarrassed Here's how I look at it: If I'm out and about--in the park, in the city, or wherever--I always enjoy hearing musicians playing. I've always enjoyed it, since I was a little kid. So, if I enjoy it, I assume other people do too. What's there to be embarrassed about? Obviously, there are some places where playing could be a nuisance, or might not be allowed at all. But if I'm outside on a nice day, in a public place, and I feel like playing...I just play! Ubizmo

I always look at it that if I play in front of people they will make fun of me, but I guess I'll need to get over that now

The fear of looking foolish is a natural thing, but when you think about it, when have you ever seen people make fun of musicians? Most people love music, and wish they could play--since most people don't play an instrument. If the instrument is something a little unusual, like an ocarina, they are even more interested. People tend to be very appreciative, and these particular ocarinas are especially rewarding to play, because the sound really rings out so they can hear it. Ben, on this forum, inspired me to start playing at open mic nights at a local pub. The first time I tried it, I was very nervous. After all, this wasn't just impromptu playing in the park; this was playing for an audience of people who came out specifically to hear music. But the experience is the same: people appreciate the music you make. Ubizmo

If they do say "Hey, I'm just a guy having some fun; not [the name of a famous musician]. Where's YOUR instrument? Let's jam".
