I just came back from a four days event of folk music in a wonderful nature. People danced and played music everywhere in the woods and in the plain. There were stages of traditional dances and of instruments, ocarina and whistle among these (I took part at both).

Most important, I joined a session with other musicians!
I could find some (part of) melodies by ear when others played, and I proposed some tune I know better.

I also proposed a tune which I just learnt the day before into the ocarina lessons and a buddy took a video. It will probably be on youtube, or at least I hope so!

AND, I have seen a Mountain Ocarina on stage. The band is named Banda Brisca. Great band, there are some videos on youtube. And hey, the sax player had a polycarbonate ocarina hanging from his neck and he played some tunes with it too! Unfortunately among the youtube videos I could not find one which featured that musician (I talked to him, and he told me that he joined the band only recently).

Unfortunately I didn't bring my camera so I could not record him. But hey it was a great emotion.
Believe it or not, when we played at the session we talked about the ocarina and I told him the "correct" fingering for (real note!) G#. While he played the instrument beautifully (no, really, probably better than anyone else on youtube, sorry guys) he never read the booklet so he just found his fingerings Smiley

That's all FOLK.

Nope! I still have to get there (it will be in July). This was the Gran Bal Trad festival, the last day is still ongoing! If you search for "Gran Bal Trad" on youtube there are plenty of videos of the 2009 and previous events. There's also an official website but it's poor Smiley.

This is so cool, because as important as the "bottom-up" effect is--amateurs like us playing on YouTube, etc--it's even more important for real musicians, in bands, to be playing MOs.  That's what people will notice!  When you see someone like AlMartino pick up a MO, in a room full of saxes and recording equipment, it sends a message.  It certainly sent a message to me.  This sax guy in Banda Brisca is sending the same message.
